Expanding Wireless Possibilities

The GR64 is a Quad Band (850/900/1800/1900) GSM/GPRS Class 10 compact Radio Device. This is physically backward compatible with the Sony Ericsson GM47 / GM48 and GR47 / GR48 Radio Devices. The GR64 offers a broad range of voice and data features. The intrinsic TCP/IP stack enables customers to make effective use of GPRS. The GR64 is configurable and possesses an extended range of input/output capabilities. The Universal Developer’s Kit can be used with the GR64 to simplify application development. In line with EU RoHS Directives on the environment, the GR64 is a Lead Free design.

RF Connector
The connector is a micro-miniature coaxial MMCX through hole mounted component Orientation and positioning is the same as GM/GR 47/48. A number of suitable MMCX type, mating plugs are available from the following manufacturers; ? Amphenol; ? IMS Connector Systems. The nominal impedance of the antenna interface is 50.

5.1.1

Analog Digital Conversion The ADC sampling rate, 10 bit resolution and 0-2.5V input range.

5.1.2

USB UART 2, the debugging port has been replaced with a USB port.

5.1.3

PCM PCM will no longer be accessible from pins 47 to 52 but from the SSP pins 49 to 52. The PCM frame structure will differ from what is currently provided by the GR47/48 range of products.

5.1.4

VREF The VREF is 2.8V however the current sourcing capability will not be as substantial and maybe as little as 30mA.

5.1.5

Audio Audio In / Out levels will be different. However the echo cancellation capabilities will be greatly improved. It is not possible to route the audio ADC/DAC out since the audio samples are memory mapped. PCM audio is supported via a dedicated interface.

Initially, power is supplied (through a battery in the Sony application). The presence of power raises the P_ON through a pull-up resistor to VCC potential. In order to power the module, P_ON is pulled to ground. Once P_ON has been held low for 125ms the primary LDOs power up ; the VREF signal comes from one of the primary LDOs. VREF supplies a reference voltage to the host, but it is also a useful indicator that the baseband is powered. VREF exceeds it’s reset threshold approx 500?s later, then 250ms afterwards the RESET line goes high. The microprocessor can latch the power on state by setting the power keep (PWR_KEEP) high after the RESET goes high and before the power on (P_ON) signal is released.

It is recommended that P_ON is held low for at least 450ms to guarantee completion of the power up sequence.

5.2

GPRS Class 10
The unit now supports GPRS class 10 which allows either one uplink and 4 downlinks or two uplinks and 3 downlinks. The power requirement for the module will increase if class 10 is utilized due to the higher number of uplink slots.

5.3

PCB Height
The thickness of the PCB has been reduced and as a result of this the “Z” position of the connectors relative to the GR47/48 has changed by approximately 0.2mm.

5.4

SIM Interface
The GR64 does not support a 5.0V SIM interface. Only 3.0V and 1.8V SIM cards are supported.
